We also have long-term goals such as a boat to replace "El Trochero", (see picture above) our first floating first aid clinic that brought hope and technical assistance to remote villages. "El Trochero II," a new project, will be our more mobile floating clinic with fully equipped treatment facilities, training space and living accommodations for staff. It will enable APECA to establish a field programs in Health, Conservation and Education reaching 30 magnet communities three times per year for many days. We will be able to travel from village to village over long stretches of the Amazon and its tributaries. The envisioned "El Trochero II" will be an aluminum-hulled, diesel-powered vessel and will have a shallow draft to allow maneuvering at low water levels; refrigeration for vaccines and medications; safety equipment; navigation aids and modern telecommunications to be able to reach El Fundo and Peruvian government hospitals in Iquitos. We estimate the capital cost at $200,000, and annual operating costs at $36,000. No gift toward "El Trochero II" is ever too small ... or too large. Meanwhile, we are happy to have our "new" 25 foot boat with a 175 hp motor to transport our volunteers from place to place.
